The above table shows the recommended floor space for the various standard sizes of pool tables when using the standard length cue stick. If you have a pole in the way, or a countertop, or even a sofa in this area this is not the end of the world. You do ultimately have the choice to use a shorter length cue for tight access shots, though it does affect normal game play somewhat.
